Cabot Primary School improved energy efficiency as part of servicing visits

Hurtwood have worked at Cabot Primary School in Bristol who are part of the Excalibur learning Academy trust. After our initial work upgrading the buildings BMS system (Building management system) from an obsolete Trend IQ3 system, the team here at Hurtwood recently conducted a servicing visit to ensure that the building is still running at the best energy efficiency possible and conduct a fault-finding exercise to rectify an issue whereby some of the ventilation was running continuously.

The original brief

Cabot primary school was originally built in the 1970’s with a further extension added in circa 2010. The original Trend IQ3 BMS was installed as part of the newer extension before we upgraded the entire system to a new Tridium BMS a few years ago.

Retrofitting to improve energy efficiency

By the time we were commissioned to conduct the work, the original Trend IQ system was obsolete.  Our upgrade involved the use of our Staefa retrofit cards and STREU modules that allowed us to rapidly upgrade the old Trend IQ3 system to the current Tridium building management system. Where wiring is still sound and effective, upgrading BMS systems via the controllers can prove to be a successful way of improving energy efficiency in a cost effective way; this method also ensures minimal disruption to daily activities while the upgrade takes place.

Targeting the causes of poor energy efficiency

We conducted a servicing visit of the new Tridium BMS that we at Hurtwood installed. As part of this follow up visit we needed to rectify an issue from the original Trend IQ3 BMS installation which was in situ prior to our work. The issue was due to the wiring from the controller being faulty, the heat recovery unit in the IT suite was not turning off at night. This heat recovery unit had been running permanently since they were installed as part of the initial Cabot school building work.

The solution

The team that carried out the servicing visit were able to locate and correct the original wiring issue thus allowing the BMS to finally time control the heat recovery unit. The service visits also help to keep the school’s energy consumption as low as possible. The better controls contribute to improved energy efficiency which in turn goes a long way towards keeping running costs down and reducing carbon emissions.
