Tackling obsolescence is well a known battle for many estates managers of commercial and public properties. Retrofit solutions are an increasingly popular option to strike the right balance for buildings that are still structurally sound but have an aging building management system. These internal systems when left unaddressed have the ability to significantly compromise energy efficiency at a very costly rate.
The brief
As part of an obsolescence plan, we recently upgraded some obsolete and failed Siemens controls on the MCP02 (Motor Control Panel) at St Bernadette Catholic Secondary School in Bristol.

St Bernadette Catholic Secondary School, Whitchurch, Bristol
The original Siemens system had been installed in 2010 as part of the Bristol Schools for Future Modernisation program however, it had been installed in a very cramped panel and was not recognised to current industry standards. This made maintaining it very difficult.
How we upgraded the building management system
We replaced the Siemens controls with our highly flexible Staeffit retrofit system which allowed us to fit the IO equipment within the existing panel. The benefit of retrofitting within the existing panel meant that there was no need to make major alterations to the existing wiring. This systems upgrade allowed St Bernadettes to get back control of the air handling units and the hot water.
