Hurtwood replaced an obsolete BMS across the Fountain Way Hospital for Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. The system was an obsolete Sauter EY3600 which had no head end PC or remote access. As a result, the local staff were unable to use it to control the heating.
How we did it
Hurtwood used retrofit cards developed specially for the obsolete EY3600 rack controllers. As a result, we significantly speeded up the installation process. These cards are connected to Hurtwood’s own Modbus data collection equipment manufactured in the UK. Modbus is an open communications protocol that has been around for over 50 years. As a result, Hurtwood’s BMS is as open as possible and will never be obsolete. Hurtwood installed four Tridium JACE controllers with 4G routers to provide the heating control and detailed graphics. The 4G routers allow us to monitor alarms and act as a first line of response to problems with the heating and hot water.
More than just BMS installation
Hurtwood helped the Trust and their maintenance contractor to resolve many outstanding issues. For instance, we ensured all the control equipment such as actuators and sensors worked correctly. As a result, we reduced overheating and energy use has fallen. During the upgrade, we helped resolve numerous mechanical issues with the heating pumps and ventilation fans. Because of our efforts, mechanical ventilation was restored to some buildings.
Getting the Best from Air Source Heat Pumps
We assisted in the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump on the building. For the heat pump, Hurtwood developed a detailed scheme for monitoring and control. Hurtwood included a BACNET over ethernet link to the heat pump’s own controller. This resulted in detailed monitoring and control of the heat pumps set-point. As a result, we ensured the heat pump operates as efficiently as possible and we had detailed information on any faults.
Hurtwood has invested in retrofit products for a wide variety of obsolete BMS systems including Staefa AS1000 and Satchwell BAS/Sigma. As a result, we can cost effectively refurbish obsolete BMS in any building from a primary school to a major hospital.
