Bristol Museum & Art Gallery improved boiler controls

Hurtwood have been pleased to be involved in on going projects at the iconic Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery to help gain better control over their building management systems.

The brief

The principal focus at Hurtwood has been maintaining the tight temperature and humidity controls within the temporary exhibition gallery. This space is just off of the ground floor and has housed a number of guest exhibitors including loans from the British Museum and the National Gallery. Due to the nature of these pieces the need for a tight control of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are a must. The way we achieved this is through remote monitoring of the BMS systems (building management systems).

The challenge to the building management systems

We have recently completed work to improve the BMS controls with the view of improving the reliability of the control of the boilers. The building had new boilers installed last year; these boilers were originally controlled by one of the boilers being set-up as a master controller which managed the other boilers. This left a single point of failure in the system which could compromise the heating for the building if this boiler was to fail. Hurtwood transferred the control of each individual boiler to the Tridium – Satrofit BMS to eliminate this single point of failure, improve efficiency and standardise the boiler control by using one of our standard boiler software modules.

The solution

Hurtwood graduate trainee Mrudul working on the BMS system upgrade

The work Hurtwood conducted on this occasion involved transferring the control of the boilers entirely to the Building Management System. By having the boilers completely controlled by the building management system, this creates the ability to significantly improve energy efficiency due to the better handling of the individual boiler systems as part of the network within the building.

While carrying out this systems upgrade, we also put in additional thermal links to bring the safety and monitoring systems of the boiler house up to accepted standards. As a result this has ensured a safer system with more robust BMS controls thus reducing volatility within the boiler network in the temporary exhibition gallery.

Do you need solutions to improve energy efficiency within your commercial building? See if our BMS upgrades could be the answer for you.
