The team at Hurtwood had the privilege of upgrading the building management system (BMS) controls for the heating and ventilation systems (HVAC) at the Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall.

This iconic gallery opened in 1895; the original building stands with a modern extension to the rear. Heritage buildings usually require an increased level of sensitivity with any systems and will often have awkward plant room spaces to navigate. This is where retrofit BMS upgrades are especially beneficial as they offer a highly effective solution that involves minimal building disruption.

Do you have a listed or heritage building that faces the challenge of obsolete building automation systems? We should be able to help. Book now for a free initial consultation.

The challenge

The original controls in the art gallery were two very obsolete trend IQ2 controllers. One of these controllers had failed resulting in the building needing to run all of the heating systems consecutively without any possibility of zoning. The other shortcoming with the trend controllers was that there was no remote access so the heating could only be managed by hand in the plantroom. There was no ability to continuously monitor alarms and temperatures and humidity.

The solution

We installed a Tridium Jace controller and a Teletronika router to enable 4G access. By installing these building management system upgrades, Hurtwood ltd were now in a  position to remotely manage the heating and ventilation system from our offices in Wiltshire. This accessibility has resulted in improved energy efficiency with our team now able to support the Newlyn Art gallery in maintaining temperature and humidity control while reducing energy use.
